Achieving a national award is a major feat for any school but doing so twice in two years is remarkable – and that’s exactly what Kibworth Mead Academy is celebrating.
For the second year in a row, the school has been recognised by the Pearson National Teaching Awards in the Secondary School of the Year category due to the impact it has had not-only on students but also people in the local community.
The award recognises schools that demonstrate exceptional commitment to improving outcomes for students and making a positive impact in their communities. It comes after a remarkable period of transformation for the school, which has established itself as a hub of opportunity and support for students and local families.
Kibworth Mead Principal, Steve Piggot, says: “We are incredibly proud to be recognised by the Pearson National Teaching Awards for the second year in a row. This award recognises the hard work and dedication of our fantastic staff who make such a positive difference. I also want to thank all of our students, families, members of our local community, and The Mead Educational Trust for their help and support, without which this recognition would not have been possible.”
Despite a national youth unemployment crisis, in both 2024 and 2025, no student left Kibworth Mead Academy without progressing into education, employment or training. Attendance and behavior have both improved, and the number of families applying to join the school nearly doubled from 2023 to last year.
Alongside its success in school, Kibworth Mead Academy has become a driving force within the local community. The academy has developed a wide range of initiatives designed to support local residents and strengthen community connections. These include charity fundraising events that have raised more than £5,000 for local charity The Well, helping to provide food and support to vulnerable residents. The school has also delivered more than 100 Christmas hampers each year to local families in need. It has hosted community mental health events, supported environmental projects including tree planting to help reduce localised flooding, and strengthened links with residential care homes through seasonal visits and community activities. The academy also works closely with the Harborough Anti-Bullying Alliance, local employers, community groups and parents to ensure students and families receive the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
These achievements have all culminated in the school receiving another bronze Pearson award for ‘National secondary school of the year’.
